Hi-Ex, the Highlands international Comic Expo, ran from 2008 to 2012. It was held in Inverness in the lovely venue of Eden Court theatre. It was organised by myself and comic writer Richmond Clements. We had a lot of support from volunteers, web-geniuses- Michael Carroll and Mike Bishop, Eden Court staff, Cos players, roller girls on crowd control, volunteer helpers- and lots of sponsors, donators, the exhibitors and guests who attended out of good will. The event fund raised for the charity Children 1st and raised a few thousand pounds over the years. One year we had some grant funding from Highland council to take comic workshops out to schools. Mostly the event was all run on good will and a love of comics. We generally had around 600 people attended the event each year, from all over the UK and highlands and islands. We were a family friendly event and gained a reputation for being one of the most fun, friendly and inclusive Comic events in the UK at that time. The after con meals for 80+ and all night comic jams also slipped into legend!
Our packed programme included classes, workshops, cosplay parades, competitions, exhibition hall, art exhibition, charity auction, film screenings, signings, sketchings, SFX demos, children’s activities and one year a zombie flash mob attended! There are now many more comic events all over the country which range from big commercial events to small fun, family shows. Many comics ideas that were conceived at Hi-Ex are now in print, friendships were forged, creative teams got together, projects became big successes and new creators became big names. It was an honour to have been part of that journey, it was a journey that so many people helped and contributed to.
This web page is just a small taste of some of the weird, whacky and great things that happened at Hi-Ex.
