The Great Lochcarron Pottery Throw Down!
The Pop Up Pottery at the Smithy Community Hub in Lochcarron is opening its doors this weekend for free pottery taster sessions as part of “Hey Clay!”, a national celebration of clay from the 4th to the 6th of December 2015– Hey Clay! Offers people free opportunities to celebrate everything clay, have some fun and unleashing their inner potter.
The Crafts Council has launched this event as part of the BBC’s Get Creative campaign and to coincide with ‘the Great Pottery Throw Down’ current showing on BBC 2, the idea is to encourage everyone across the UK to get creative with clay. From Strathcarron to Cornwall – studios, workshops, museums, galleries and colleges will be hosting free events where people can roll up their sleeves and try their hands at pottery. The Pop Up Pottery is the only venue in Scotland taking part in the celebration.
Vicky Stonebridge opened up The Pop Up Pottery Easter 2015 to make use of the empty former blacksmiths building. There has been such a high demand for classes and pottery sessions that the one day a week pop up temporary studio space is hoped can be developed into a full time, all year studio. The pottery will be Open for the free Pottery taster sessions from 11am to 3pm Saturday and Sunday 5th & 6th December. Sessions are free, but if anyone wanted to keep anything made a small fee for materials, glazing and firing costs will be chargeable. No Booking is required but old and warm clothes are recommended as Clay work gets messy, and the old building gets cold at this time of year. All ages and abilities are welcome to have a go at hand building or throwing techniques, Tea and Coffee will also be available to warm up chilled fingers.
